More than Welcome
Observation and Record on Daily Situation, 2011
Shortly after moving to a new place in Utrecht, the Netherlands, I began a small gesture of welcome by placing a slice of bread on a tile in the backyard—an area that, situated right next to a canal, functions as a semi-public space frequented by passersby and occasional visitors.
As a way of greeting and inviting connection, I offered this humble gesture to anyone who might encounter it. Over the course of a year living in this location, I observed and documented the position and condition of the bread each day, using it as a subtle indicator of the presence, behavior, and movement patterns of backyard visitors—whether human or animal.
Through this quiet, ongoing act, I sought to build a relationship with the space and those who entered it, using the bread as both a marker and a medium for connection, attention, and silent exchange.
